Have you ever got a blue screen while using or booting your PC. We call it the blue screen of death, usually means something serious has happened to your PC. Here are some ways to help solve this mystery on your PC.
1. Did you install new hard ware or software recently? If yes, try disconnecting or uninstalling the new hardware / software. See if the problem goes away.
2. RAM errors can cause a blue screen or Windows to freeze. Check your RAM, remove it from your PC, make sure there is no dust on the RAM sticks or slots. Create a Memory Test Boot Disk and run it for about 1 hour, any RAM problems should show up by then. If RAM has any errors replace it. Down load boot disc ISO here. Free Download, click link on left side of page.
3.If you get a blue screen during boot up or Computer reboots during startup then your hard drive may have errors on it affecting startup files or the registry. Get your copy of Windows XP then boot into the recovery console. Type "chkdsk /r" to repair the hard drive. with any luck your PC will boot up. Spinrite from www.grc.com is a good hard disk repair utility.
4. Sometimes a blue screen will reveal a file name like "nv4_disp.dll". Google the file name and you will see it is a video card driver problem. uninstalling the driver and using the original one from the CD will usually fix the problem. The file name will vary with the error so use Google, it really is your friend.
5. If all else fails, try scanning the hard drive for a virus or spyware using another PC with up to date definitions. If no luck you may have to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.
Blue screens are a pain in the BUTT!, there are lot of reasons they happen, mostly driver problems. The info listed above will help. I have kept it simple, you can find more info using Google or try this page.
