Fix Internet Connection after Malware Removal
If you have experienced Internet connection problems after you remove a virus or malware, you may receive one of the following error messages:
- Unable to connect to Internet
- Can't establish a connection to the server
- Limited Connectivity
- No internet access
- Cannot display the webpage
- Identifying...
- Acquiring Network Address
- No Internet Connection Found
This is a common problem and is easy to fix.
Note: If one step does not work, skip to the next step (not all steps will be required).
Reset Proxy Settings and Flush DNS
Some malware will turn on an Internet proxy setting and corrupt Windows DNS cache, which can prevent you from accessing the Internet. Follow these instructions to fix this problem:
Download MiniToolBox and open it. Check the following boxes: Flush DNS, Reset IE Proxy Settings, Reset FF Proxy Settings If you have Firefox open, close it before you click the Go button.
Reset TCP/IP and Winsock Settings
Windows TCP/IP and Winsock settings can get corrupted due to malware, which will cause Internet connection problems. Follow these instructions to reset the settings:
1. Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
To reset the TCP/IP automatically, simply download and run this file: Microsoft Fix it 50199. Follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.
2. Reset the Winsock Settings
To reset the Winsock settings automatically, simply download and run this file: Microsoft Fix it 50203. Follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.
Fix System Driver Files and Services
Some malware will infect the system driver that you need to access the Internet. When the malware is removed, the infected driver will not work properly. Follow these instructions to fix this problem:
1. Fix TDI Translation Driver (tdx.sys)
Download tdx.bat and open it. Restart your computer.
2. Fix TDX Service
Download tdx.reg and open it. Click Yes and restart your computer.
3. Fix Ancillary Function Driver (afd.sys)
The AFD driver is a Microsoft driver that manages the Winsock TCP/IP communications protocol.
Download afd.bat and open it. Restart your computer.
4. Fix AFD Service
Download afd.reg and open it: Windows XP - Vista - Windows 7 Be sure to download the appropriate afd file for your operating system. Click Yes and restart your computer.
Reset Your Router
